Kansai Summer Guide 2026: Experience Japan’s Festivals in Osaka and Kyoto

Summer has just arrived and if you are traveling to Kansai region this Summer, you are about to step into the absolute peak of Japanese traditional culture. The region is currently hosting two of the big Three Festivals of Japan: Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and Osaka’s Tenjin Matsuri. Both events offer an unforgettable glimpse into the centuries-old rituals, breathtaking spectacles and local spirits. Here is your ultimate traveler’s guide to navigating and experiencing these two legendary summer festival.

KYOTO

■ GION MATSURI（祇園祭）

You will see locals walking in beautiful yukata (summer kimono), many streets closed to cars and gigantic floats which were built entirely without nails.

Dating back to the year 869, the Gion Matsuri began as a spiritual purification ritual to protect Kyoto from a deadly plague. Today, it transform the city center into a breathtaking museum. The streets is glowing by thousands of paper lanterns. The floats were wrapped in cultural heritage such as tapestries and ancient clothes from China’s the Silk Road.

July 14 – 16 and July 21〜23 | Yoiyama Nights The streets are packed with lively Yatai (food stalls) and delicious aromas on July 15 – 16. While July 14, 21 and 23 offer a calmer atmosphere without street vendors. You can see the floats illuminated by paper lanterns and enter the Kyo-Machiya (Kyoto traditional townhouses) during the Byobu Matsuri (Folding screen festival) which is held around the west side of Karasuma Station. Buying a Chimaki (bamboo grass amulet) and making a memorable night by wearing yukata (summer kimono). July 17 and 24 | Grand Procession (Yamaboko Junko) Watch the locals pull the gigantic floats on the streets and they executing 90-degree turns on wooden logs at the intersections (Tsujimawashi). ■ Tenjin Matsuri (天神祭)

With its history spanning more 1,000 years, Tenjin Matsuri is held to honor Sugawara no Michizane (845 – 903), the patron deity of learning, scholarship and the arts. A magnificent parade transition seamlessly from the land to the river, culminating in a jaw-dropping fireworks show.

July 24 | Opening rituals Head to the Osaka Tenmangu Shrine to witness the morning prayers, lion dances (shishimai) and Mikoshi (portable shrines) procession. Time: Opening rituals (morning), Japanese drum performance (afternoon to evening). July 25 | Grand Fireworks 15:30 Land procession – The Mikoshi (portable shrines) procession, ceremonial ox carts with more 3,000 participants marching around the town. 18:00 Water procession – More 100 boats lit the blazing bonfires along the river. 19.30 Fireworks – The fireworks show over the Okawa river Time: 15:30〜20:00 Location: Around Osaka Tenman-gu Shrine (Land procession) and the Okawa river (Water procession and Fireworks). ■ Nagoshi no Harae (夏越の祓え)

Known as the final summer purification festival in Osaka. The highlights including the Nagoshi Harai Shinji (passing through a sacred reed ring for purification) on July 31 and the Miyoshi (portable shrines) processions on August 1st.
